Implements

I am interested in challenging traditional hierarchies of meaning and value. Just as women’s work in the home continues to be undervalued culturally, socially, and politically,  the functional objects that populate the home have also been ignored as significant testaments to these issues. In my Implements series, I have been exploring relationships and potential overlaps between tools used in the kitchen, tools used for cleaning, and objects implicated in visual and erotic pleasure.  After gathering information through observation and study, the process I use is an intuitive one involving explorations in the studio. Within this format the references to the body, labor, and pleasure and the ability of objects to function or not takes on surreal and/or metaphorical meanings. While my work obviously engages in social and feminist issues I am not interested in assigning the work specific functions or an explicit social agenda but rather, poetically exploring the expectations of domestic life.
